Do fire door hinges need intumescent pads?
Yes and we cannot emphasis this enough - fire door hinges will not be fully effective without intumescent pads. These stop the spread of smoke and fire through the gaps created by fitting the hinge into the door, so they are vital to not only maintain compliance but, more importantly, keep the fire door working effectively. A fire door is tested as a complete assembly, including all essential hardware such as intumescent pads and seals - therefore, it will only work correctly if it’s installed using the same equivalent components as when it was tested. These will be listed on the fire door manufacturer’s installation instructions and ignoring these could have catastrophic consequences - it's just not worth the risk.
How many hinges should a fire door have?
Fire doors should be fitted with a minimum of 3 CE rated hinges for timber doors, while steel doors or doors over 2400mm tall will require 4 hinges.
